Flip the Classroom - Flip the Textbook - Flip the Cost

Flip the Whole SandBox

Flip the classroom - Getting students actively engaged in learning is more useful than traditional lectures. To remove the narative thread that weaves a story of physics, that lectures provide, can be made more easy through a system where shared open source resources can be picked and chosen from an ala carte menu. This is essentially creating a path to mastery through the online material.

BoxSand is an online learning environment full of links to: videos, practice problems, open source textbooks, educational websites, simulations... etc. The site is setup with a directory structure that acts as a large database of content found at OSU and around the web. Students are guided through the site and their out-of-class activities with the courses Daily Learning Guide.

The BoxSand site can track OSU students' progress through their out-of-class engagement with the site's content. The hope is this information can be used to help determine which content is best suited for the Path to Mastery laid out in the Daily Learning Guide.

The initial phase of the project is the implementation of 3.5 weeks of physics 201 content, which corresponds to one midterm worth of PH201 content. During fall 2015 the students will engage with these webpages. Funds from the L.L.Stewart grant provided support to employ OSU students to fill in much of the content on the BoxSand site.
